Mario
Frangoulis / Follow Your Heart
review by Ed Vincent
Mario Frangoulis has an angelic voice and his selection of songs
will give your ears a feast. The album covers a broad range of
styles and languages. He is already a big hit in his homeland of
Greece. He will be taking to the road and you might get a chance
to hear this young tenor with a bright future ahead of him.
He has a smooth sound from his Mediterranean genes and
I am sure the other demi-gods are pleased with his vocal
attributes. Hearing his songs more than a couple of times
may very well make them all his signature songs, and his
signature might very well become quite large......
"Beautiful music, sung with art and
class...a bright future." OPJ
MARIO FRANGOULIS WRAPS SMOOTH,
SOULFUL
POP BALLADS IN HIS SENSUOUS TENOR VOICE
ON SONY CLASSICAL’S FOLLOW YOUR HEART
CD RELEASED ON FEBRUARY 1 ,2005
Frangoulis Joins Piano Sensation Jim Brickman
For U.S. Tour In February & March 2005
(New York, NY, January 11, 2005) — Following up his exuberant Sony
Classical debut album Sometimes / Dream, Greek tenor Mario Frangoulis
looks inward for his latest recording Follow Your Heart, blending his
sensuous tenor voice with an all-new, soulful collection of smooth pop
ballads and classically flavored songs. Latin pop sensation Alejandro
Fernandez makes a guest appearance on the album, joining Frangoulis in
the song ‘Hay Mas.” Follow Your
Head will be released on Tuesday, February 1, 2005.
Sometimes I Dream continues on the Billboard
Classical Crossover chart, where it has remained for almost 90
consecutive weeks. Though that album introduced Frangoulis to an
international audience, he is already a multi-platinum recording artist
in his native Greece. Audiences across America will get to know the
tenor in February and March, when he joins romantic piano sensation Jim
Brickman for a series of concerts featuring excerpts from both of
Frangoulis’s albums, selections from Brickman’s recordings and a couple
of surprises.
Frangoulis joins Brickman on tour at the DeVos Performance
Hall in Grand Rapids MI on February 3, followed by performances in
Saginaw Ml (The Theater at the Dow Events Center on
February 4); Des Moines (Des Moines Civic Center Theatre on February
10); Milwaukee (Pabst Theater on February 12); Omaha (Orpheum Theater
on February 14); Billings MT (Alberta Bair Theater on February 25);
Atlanta (The Fox on March 4);
Roanoke VA (Roanoke Civic Center on March 5); and New
York (Carnegie Hall on May 6).
Frangoulis himself planned the repertoire and
defined the concept
for Follow Your Heart, which explores a Latin flavor and relaxed warmth
that represents a bit of a departure from the intensity of Sometimes /
Dream. The tenor calls Follow Your Heart “a very personal album ...
that I hope reflects my most profound feelings about life ... putting
across my views about friendship and love, family and patriotism.”
Most of the tracks on Follow Your Head were produced (and several
written) by Emanuele Ruffinengo — internationally known for his
Grammy-winning work with singer Alejandro Sanz — and the album reunites
Frangoulis with executive producer Steve Wood, who produced three
tracks on the new album and was at the helm
of Sometimes / Dream. As with Sometimes I Dream, Frangoulis sings in
multiple languages on Follow Your Heart, with most of the songs in
English. The album’s 12 tracks also include songs in
Greek, Italian and Spanish.
Two tracks on Follow Your Heart have a classical
pedigree — “Another World” is adapted from the popular chorus “Vat
Pensiero” from Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Nabucco, and “Adagio”
is taken from the slow movement of the famous Oboe Concerto
of Italian Baroque composer Alessandro
Marcello. Another track — “Come What May” — comes from
the soundtrack of the hit 2001 film Moulin Rouge. “Here’s to the
Heroes” — a new song, with lyrics by Don Black and also set to
the main theme from John Barry’s Oscar-winning score for Dances With
Wolves — was introduced by Frangoulis at the Summer Olympic Games in
Athens as a tribute to the athletes competition. The song titles
describe the album’s soulful, contemplative mood
— from the title track to “Bridge of Dreams,” “Another World”
and “Benedictus.” They also include a duet — “Cumme” — with the young
Spanish singer Melody.
