September 18, 2005![]() NEW RELEASE: Joshua's Tchaikovsky Disc in America on Sept. 20 Tchaikovsky On Sept. 20, Sony releases Joshua's Tchaikovsky album in the United States. Recorded live in January of this year, this exciting CD is the concerto as the composer wrote it, without cuts or alterations to the score. The disc also includes Tchaikovsky's "Meditation" in D and the "Dance Russe" from the ballet Swan Lake. "Joshua Bell is one of the violinists of the moment, and Tchaikovsky's D major concerto a deserving favourite, much more than a pop classic. Throw in the shimmering strings of the Berlin Philharmonic, under the magisterial Michael Tilson Thomas, and you have a combination which can scarcely go wrong. This is a majestic recording, thanks to Bell's increasing maturity; the slow movement is especially vivid and haunting amid his masterful virtuosity in the opening and closing allegri. The plaintive Meditation in D minor and Danse Russe from Swan Lake are welcome makeweights on a disc which doesn't really need such an embarrassment of riches." -- The Observer Joshua (Josh) Bell with the Berliner Philharmoniker Conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas Do Honor to Tchaikovsky review by Ed Vincent It is hard to believe that a critic in Vienna at the time of Tchaikovsky's debut of his Concerto in D Major for Violin and orchestra would have written something like; "bad for the ears". This is a wonderful composition with a romantic heart and a sweet melody, and now loved by many throughout the world. Tchaikovsky's friends and admirers were also knocked back by the rough review and fought back, by teaching to all of their students. Joshua Bell is a treat to listen to and his selection of music is right on the mark. This album is a feast for the ears from the first track to the ending note. Some refer to Bell's performances as maturing, I would say improving and that I hope never matures. Romance requires a certain vigor and passion, whether it be in music or poetry - and staying young helps. b![]() http://www.joshuabell.com/ Purchase Joshua Bell's Album ![]() ![]() © Oak Park Journal published by Suburban Journals of Chicago Inc. |
