The Ladykillers
The dark comedy on the screen
was a treat to see, lots
of good visual and verbal humor.
The music which
supports the fine film is an
experience in itself. The
varied talents of the musicians
and choirs will give you
the reminiscence of the film,
but also the feel of going
to church in the heart of many
big cities-Baptist that is.
The soundtrack will have you
neck deep in southern
black culture and wanting to
dance onto church.
A fun selection of music and
a grand film.
DMZ/COLUMBIA/SONY MUSIC SOIJNDTRAX SET TO
RELEASE
THE LADY KILLERS - MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE
Soundtrack Album Reunites Grammy-Winning Producer
T Bone Burnett
With Academy Award-Winning Joel and Ethan
Coen
For First Time Since “0 Brother. Where Are
Thou?”
New Comedy Starring Tom Hanks Opens Nationwide
Friday, March 26
DMZ/Columbia/Sony Music Soundtrax is set to
release The Ladykillers - Music From The Motion Picture, the soundtrack
album from one of the year’s most eagerly- anticipated film comedies, on
Tuesday, March 23.
The Ladykillers - Music From The Motion Picture
marks the first time producer T Bone Burnett and filmmakers Joel and Ethan
Coen have collaborated on a film soundtrack since the album of music from
“0 Brother, Where Art Thou?” took home multiple Grammys, including “Album
of the Year,” in 2001. One of the best-selling soundtrack albums in history,
“0 Brother, Where Art Thou?” has been certified 7x platinum by the RJAA.
For “The Ladykillers,” Burnett and the Coen
Brothers have created a film score that is both classic and modem, featuring
timeless gospel tunes dating back to the 1930s, as well as new hip-hop
music, incorporating elements of classic gospel, from the Grammy nominated
Nappy Roots, who perform the album’s first single is “Trouble Of This World
(Coming Home).”
The Coen Brothers have, as usual, made music
an integral element in
their film. “The Ladykillers’ features a combination
of gospel music, hip-hop music, and baroque chamber music. “That’s actually
one of the things that’s been very interesting about this project,” says
Joel Coen.
“In this film, as with ‘0 Brother, Where Art
Thou?,’ Joel and Ethan have woven the music in as an essential texture
of the film, almost as a
character itself,” says T Bone Burnett.
“I’ve heard all my life that rock and roll
was born from gospel music, but
it wasn’t until I went back and listened to
the whole canon of gospel from the last century that I realized — it really
did all come from gospel,”
laughs Burnett. “So what we’ve done is to
go back and rediscover some
of the great gospel music that people have
left behind — The Soul
Stirrers, Bill Landford and the Landfordaires,
Blind Willie Johnson.”
Music fans can hear samples of every track
on the album at the official web site for “The Ladykillers” (ladykillers.movies.com).
“The Ladykillers,” starring Academy Award®-winner
Tom Hanks, opens nationwide on Friday, March 26. The film is the Coen Brothers’
retelling
of the critically-acclaimed 1955 black comedy,
“The Ladykillers.” Hanks stars as Goldthwait Higginson Don Ill, Ph.D.,
a charlatan professor who’s assembled a gang of “experts” for the heist
of the century. The thieves: experts in explosions, tunneling, and muscle,
and the critical “inside man.” The base of operations: the root cellar
of an unsuspecting, church-going little old lady named Mrs. Munson, played
by Irma P. Hall. The ruse: the five need a place to practice their church
music. The problem: it quickly becomes evident that Don’s thieves lack
the mental capacity to do the job. The bigger problem:they have all seriously
underestimated their upstairs host. When Mrs. Munson stumbles onto their
plot and threatens to notify the authorities, the felonious five decide
to do her in. After all, how hard can it be to knock off one old
lady?
