University in St. Louis Football Lands 22 on All-UAA Team St. Louis, Mo.,
November 24, 2008 — The Washington University in St. Louis
football team had 22 student-athletes named
to the all-University Athletic Association (UAA) Team, as announced
today by the league office.
Sophomore wide receiver Tom Gulyas, Medina, Ohio (Medina) led a group
of three Bears who were named to the first-team offensive unit. Gulyas
hauled in 51 catches for 632 yards and three touchdowns, and was second
in the UAA in receptions per game (5.1) and receiving yards per game
(63.2). Joining Gulyas on the first-team was senior offensive guard
Nate Frogge, Kankakee, Ill. (Bishop McNamara) and freshman center Joe
Rhein, Fairview Heights, Ill. (Belleville East).
Junior linebacker Andrew Berryman, St. Peters, Mo. (Francis Howell
Central) and senior cornerback Drew Makar, Willoughby, Ohio (Eastlake
North) were the representatives on the first-team defense. Berryman led
team in tackles for loss (8.5) and was second in tackles (62), while
Makar had a team-best five interceptions and 10 pass break-ups.
Sophomore Jim O’Brien, Wheaton, Ill. (Wheaton Warrenville South) earned
first-team honors as a kick returner for the second-consecutive season.
O’Brien averaged a conference-best 25.0 yards per kick return, and was
second in all-purpose yards at 107.2 per game.
Junior running back Matt Glenn, Issaquah, Wash. (Issaquah) was the lone
representative on the second-team offense after leading the Bears with
462 yards rushing and four touchdowns.
Washington U. was well represented on the second-team defense,
garnering a conference-best five honorees: sophomore defensive back
Brandon Brown, Lakeside Park, Ky. (Covington Catholic), junior safety
Tim Machan, Wauwatosa, Wis. (Marquette University High), sophomore
defensive lineman Dan Mulholland, Pittsburgh, Pa. (Upper St. Clair), junior inside
linebacker Brett Schiffman, Oak Park, Ill. (Oak Park & River Forest)
and senior defensive lineman Brent Sensenich, Olathe, Kan. (Olathe
North).
O’Brien picked up all-UAA honors as a punt returner joining freshman
punter Austin Morman, Rockford, Ill. (Boylan Catholic) on the special
teams second-team. O’Brien averaged a team-best 6.6 yards per return in
2008, while Morman led the conference with a 40.4 average in his rookie
campaign.
Earning honorable-mention honors on offense was senior tight end Miles
Chan, Hagerstown, Md. (St. James School), senior offensive lineman Dan
Elliott, Indianapolis, Ind. (Cathedral), junior H-back Greg Lachaud,
Oviedo, Fla. (Oviedo), sophomore offensive lineman David Mackey,
Cincinnati, Ohio (Anderson) and senior quarterback Buck Smith,
Tuscaloosa, Ala. (Westlake).
On defense, junior defensive lineman Nick Gialessas, Lemont, Ill.
(Lemont), sophomore linebacker Kyle Huber, O’Fallon, Mo. (St. Dominic),
junior defensive back Tim Olivos, St. Louis, Mo. (Chaminade) and
sophomore defensive lineman Todd Palmer, Vista, Calif. (Rancho Buena
Vista) all earned honorable-mention honors.
Washington University finished the 2008 season with a 5-5 overall
record and a 1-2 mark in the conference.
