LLOYD STOMPS ‘EM TO WIN ROAD RUNNER 100 IN RECORD FASHION
Milwaukee, Wis., June 2—The Road Runner 100 Indy Pro Series race was an
exercise in record-breaking proportions for emerging open wheel
sensation Alex Lloyd.
For the first time in Indy Pro Series history, a driver has won the
first five events to start a season. The same old movie played in a
different town Saturday as Alex Lloyd led flag-to-flag to score his
fifth consecutive Series victory in the Roadrunner 100 at The Milwaukee
Mile, driving for Sam Schmidt Motorsports.
“It’s crazy,” Lloyd stated following his convincing win. “I always set
high expectations, but five wins wasn’t something we really even
thought about,” Lloyd continued. “But I’m enjoying this too much to let
it end anytime soon.”
Lloyd started from the pole position and led every lap in holding
off Mike Potekhen and Jonathan Klein following a late caution, for a
2.28 second margin of victory.
“I had a good car and just tried to keep my nose clean the best I
could,” Potekhen admitted after edging Klein at the line for second
place. “I knew we didn’t have anything for Alex (Lloyd) and he kind of
just left us in the dust. But it’s a good showing for our fifth race of
the year to be on the second step of the podium.”
For Klein, 20, the third place result was appreciated at the track
closest to his Long Grove, Ill. hometown. “Some of my best friends from
high school were here today to watch,” Klein stated. “It was good to
get a good result for them.”
First-year series Indy Pro Series driver Stephen Simpson made contact
with the turn two wall and then continued on America’s Legendary Oval.
Forced to retire early due to contact were Hideki Mutoh, Chris Festa,
Andrew Prendeville, Logan Gomez, and defending race winner Jaime
Camara.

An early race pile-up scattered the field
Following another quick caution for a Jon Brownson spin, the race
unfolded under the green flag with Lloyd pulling out to a near
straightaway advantage over Potekhen and Klein, while Sean Guthrie
moved up nicely to secure the fourth spot. When Ken Losch spun off turn
two and hit the inside backstretch wall to draw a caution on lap 89, a
ten lap dash to the finish was set up with Potekhen and Klein looking
to end Lloyd’s perfect season victory record.
However as the final restart ensued, Lloyd was not to be denied and he
shot ahead, building to a 2.28 second margin of victory.
Guthrie crossed the finish line in fourth place, the last car on the
lead lap, one spot better than Oconomowoc, Wis. native Bobby Wilson,
who remains fourth in the point standings.
Portland, Oregon’s Ryan Justice, Al Unser III, Joey Scarallo, Marc
Williams, and recent Vanderbilt University mechanical engineering
graduate Brad Jaeger completed the top ten.
