BEARS 20 and the 49ERS 13...Good Start
for the Pre-Season in Our New Field

by Dan Peters and Joe Paolella

The 1st Pre-season Game at the new Soldier field Saturday took a back-seat as the Bears completed huge  blockbuster trade during the game with the San Francisco 49ers.

Chicago upgraded its pass rush by acquiring left defensive end Adewale Ogunleye from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for wide receiver Marty Booker and a 2005 draft pick.  He led the AFC in sacks with 15 in 2003.The Bears did the right thing.

Both Head Coach Lovie Smith & Bears GM Jerry Angelo visited Marty Booker to inform him of the trade. He was not at Soldier Field Saturday night. Smith and Angelo both admitted in a post game press conference ... "it was not an easy deal to do, but we did it for the best interest of the team"

On to the game....

The Bears Defense struck hard & fast..Mike Brown intercepted 49ers' QB Ken Dorsey's first attempted pass to give the Bears' offense the ball in 49ers' territory. Second Year quarterback Rex Grossman marched the Bears downfield and scored the 1st points of the game when Edinger connected on 34 yard field goal.  The key play of the drive was Thomas Jones' 19-yard run put the ball on the 49ers' 21-yard line.

The defense continued its attack on the 49ers' in the second quarter when Bryan Johnson recovered a botched punt, from there the Bears only needed two rushing plays by Adrian Peterson to find the end zone. Peterson's 15-yard run to the 49ers' 3-yard line was the key play of the drive.

The Bears second string plays showed some sparkle in the fourth quarter when they took advantage of good field position starting near midfield and marched the rest of the way. Jonathan Quinn's 30 yards passing on 3 attempts and RB Brock Forsey finished the impressive drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. Jonathan Quinn's 15-yard pass to Jason McKie to 49ers' 10-yard line. set up the decisive score. BEARS 20 49ERS 13

The Bears won consecutive Preseason games for the 1st time in 3 years. A feat even the 1985 Super Bowl Bears did not match... The Monsters of the Midway only won 1 game in that pre season.

Some funny moments from the game....

Rookies Claude Harriott and Nathan Vasher earned both praise and ribbing after scoring their first NFL interceptions on back-to-back defensive plays in Saturday's pre-season win over the San Francisco.

Harriott picked off a screen pass and had only quarterback Cody Pickett to beat for a sure touchdown. But Pickett dove and tripped up the 6-4, 260-pounder after a 14-yard return, a transgression that Harriott has been teased about by teammates and even friends.

I'm still getting it," Harriott said Monday at Halas Hall. "I got calls from home and everything. Every now and then a teammate pops in and says, 'Good catch, but don't get tackled by the quarterback.'"

The most remarkable aspect of the play was that Harriott never had an interception while playing defensive end at Glades Central High School in Belle Glade, Fla., or in four seasons at the University of Pittsburgh.

Vasher's actions were even more characteristic of a rookie. After stepping in front of receiver Kahlil Hill to pick off a Pickett pass, he headed off the field but then retreated to the San Francisco sideline to retrieve the ball as a souvenir. When he realized he couldn't get back to the Bears bench before the next play, he stayed on the opposite sideline and promptly drew an illegal substitution penalty. A rookie mistake?

"I told coach (Lovie) Smith that it was my fault," said defensive backs coach Vance Bedford. "He's a rookie. That's his first interception and you should always want to get that.

"I told him to get the ball. The thing was, I didn't ask him to go stand next to their head football coach. I was asking him to come back across and he was standing up there having a good time like he was out there with the boys.

"I take responsibility for that. He was a rookie and didn't know. That is definitely my fault."
