The Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park

An evening of entertainment spiced with information about one of the world’s most important writers and his love affair with the mystery, beauty and excitement of Africa will be held Friday, Nov. 3, at the Brookfield Zoo.

The gala, “Safari Africa: A Hemingway Adventure,” is this year’s major fundraising event of the Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park.  The event begins at 6 p.m.

The program include cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, dinner, both silent and live auctions, dancing, short readings from Hemingway’s African stories and more.

Allan Baldwin, chairperson of the Foundation board, will present video clips of his visit to places where Hemingway encountered animals of the Serengeti Plain and
Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania near the Kenya border.  Part of the program will take place at Habitat Africa, Brookfield Zoo’s life-like reproduction of an African savannah.

Tickets are $150 per person.  The event is part of a yearlong celebration of the
Nobel Prize winner’s place in the world with the theme, “Ernest Hemingway: From Oak Park to the Global Village: His Footprints on the World.”  For more information, call the Hemingway Foundation at (708) 848-2222 or visit its website at www.ehfop.org.

“Ernest Hemingway’s fascination with Africa went far beyond his interests in big
game hunting,” said Redd Griffin, a prominent Oak Park educator and Hemingway historian.  “Ernest was a conservationist who cared about animals and the wilderness that sustained them.  One of his boyhood heroes was President Theodore Roosevelt, a naturalist and outdoorsman, who led his own African safari in 1909.  And, of course, Ernest also found Africa beautiful and mystical and a source of inspiration for his work.”

In his fictional memoir, True at First Light, Hemingway wrote, “In Africa a thing is
true at first light and a lie by noon and you have no more respect for it than for the lovely, perfect weed-fringed lake you see across the sun-baked salt plain.  You have to walk across that plain in the morning and you know that no such lake is there.
But now it is there absolutely true, beautiful and believable.”

Several of Hemingway’s books and short stories, including “The Snows of Kilimanjaro,” resulted from his African visits in the 1930s and 1950s.  Brookfield
Zoo opened in 1934, the year Hemingway finished the first of two safaris in eastern Africa.  His book about big game hunting, Green Hills of Africa, was published in 1935.

Carl Van Doren, reviewing the book for the New York Herald Tribune, wrote:

“….An artist must have a subject which is important to him, and Mr. Hemingway returns to what is for him the most important subject.  The death of soldiers, the
death of bulls in the ring, the death of wild animals. ‘Green Hills of Africa’ is his account of hunting in the country around Lake Manyara in [Tanzania]…He has attempted ‘to write an absolutely true book to see whether the shape of a country
and the pattern of a month’s action can, if truly presented, compete with a work of
the imagination.’

“Of course they can, and his book does.”

Proceeds from the gala at Brookfield Zoo will help fund Hemingway Foundation projects and its outreach programs for Hemingway fans around the world.
