"Masked And Anonymous - Music From The Motion Picture"
review by Ed Vincent
"Oak Park Journal declares this a fun, world
quality
album of Dylan Hits"
Many of the songs are Dylan hits
from years gone by and some are quite new. The really fun aspect
of this music is hearing the
different interpretations expressed
in different languages and styles from all over the world-World music filled
with Bob Dylan. Dylan sings a number of his own songs too, but the
feel of the album is all encompassing
of our great blue planet.
Keep on Bob, lets have some
more.

(dateline - New York - Columbia Records - July 8, 2003)
Columbia/Sony Music Soundtrax will release Masked And Anonymous - Music
From The Motion Picture, the album of music from the eagerly-awaited feature
film starring Bob Dylan, in the artist's first dramatic role in 16
years, as well as Jeff Bridges, Penelope
Cruz, Jessica Lange, John Goodman and Luke Wilson. Masked And Anonymous
- Music From The Motion Picture will be in stores on Tuesday, July 22.

Masked And Anonymous - Music From The Motion Picture features
12 Bob Dylan compositions performed by various artists and two traditional
folk tunes. Four of the album's new recordings are performed in the film
by Bob Dylan himself and created especially for the movie: "Dixie" and
"Diamond Joe" are traditional songs recorded and performed by Dylan
for the first time here while "Cold Irons Bound" and "Down In The
Flood" are new performances of classic songs. "City of Gold," a bonus track
performed by the Dixie Hummingbirds, is a previously unreleased Bob Dylan
song. Also featured are the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia, Los Lobos, Shirley
Caesar and an array of international artists including the Turkish
sensation Sertab and Italy's Articolo 31 performing the world's first,
and probably last, version of "Like A Rolling Stone" to
incorporate both a sound sample from Dylan's original recording and a
new rap in Italian. (Please see the full track listing from
Masked And Anonymous - Music From The Motion Picture which follows.)
After the principle filmmaking for "Masked And Anonymous" had been
completed, two final days were taken to lens Dylan and his band -
Larry Campbell (guitar), Charlie Sexton (guitar). Tony Gamier (bass), recent
addition George Recile (drums) — creating what would become the first
official live recordings to be released in the US of Dylan performing with
this outstanding touring ensemble. Eight of those historic performances
can be heard in the film while four are available for the first time on
Masked And Anonymous - Music From The Motion Picture.
"Masked And Anonymous" is the first feature film to be directed by
Larry Charles. Charles has directed multiple episodes of Larry David's
HBO series, "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and served as a writer, producer, supervising
producer and executive producer on two of modem television's most successful
comedies, "Seinfeld" and "Mad About You." He is the recipient ofaPeabody
Award, a Golden Globe, two Emmy Awards and three additional Emmy nominations
for his work on "Seinfeld," along
with two additional Emmy nominations for "Mad About You."
When it came time to select the music for "Masked And Anonymous,"
Charles went through literally thousands of existing Dylan covers from
performers around the globe before settling on the extraordinary picks
included on the film's soundtrack and album.
"This film is like the interior landscape of a great Bob Dylan
song," Charles has said, "rich with vivid imagery, poetic language
and the dance of reality and illusion." Set in what Charles calls
a "mythological Third-World America," "Masked And Anonymous" stars Bob
Dylan as "Jack Fate," a fallen rock legend who's sprung from jail well
past his prime to perform a benefit concert. Also starring in the film
are Jeff
Bridges, John Goodman, Jessica Lange, Penelope Cruz, and Luke
Wilson with an ensemble cast including Angela Bassett, Bruce Dem, Ed Harris,
Giovanni Ribisi, Mickey Rourke, Christian Slater, Fred Ward and more.
