Review by Ed Vincent
This adaptation is a
World Premiere event for Oak Park and the Village Players Jr. ensemble.
Mr. Peters has done a nice job to make the tale of Hamlet relevant for
the younger generation of the Hip Hop genre. There is cultural
pluralism on stage as noted by both physical and spoken inflections of
presence.
Instead of the power of a King,
the power is in record sales and production of the same. Denmark
Records functions as the nobility and the power of this Shakespeare inspired
plot. The MTV reporters
narrate and inform throughout
this tale of Freudian
hell. "To be or Not to
Be." is retold with the desires
and questions of life and its
value as seen through
the eyes of the young Hamlet.
Dan Friedman reflects
on his youthful 16 years, his
record sales success, and the loss of his much loved father. Dan
Friedman is
the star of the show and the
cast is equally supportive
in their fine efforts.
A fun story, and nice performances are accompanied with great sound work
and creative lighting.
Through time the mantle piece worn by the
King (the crown) has been a symbol of power and domination. You hear things
like the crowning champion. or someone fighting to win the crown in a particular
sport or entertainment competition. One of the stories in our culture that
best illustrates man’s passion for power is the story of Hamlet. The story
of a man so desperate for power that he murders his own brother and how
that same thirst for power and the results of it drive a young man to insanity.
Hamlet is one of the most loved, most performed and most adapted shows
of all time because like many of Shakespeare’s plays its message is timeless.
Power corrupts, Absolute power corrupts absolutely (forgive me if that’s
not the exact quote). When I was looking to update the show and set it in
a time and place that is relevant to me and the young people I work with
the MTV and hip-hop culture immediately struck me as one of the strongest
comparisons. One of the most common things you hear in the lyrics of rap
and hip-hop are the desire to dominate others and be the king of this particular
music style. What you are witnessing today began as a simple dream about
6 years ago. This idea is one that I had since college but was never able
to bring it to fruition. Now that I have landed in the right place and
have young adults who are passionate about theatre and this particular
piece the opportunity for this play to be presented has arrived. Thank
you for being a part of this dream come true. I hope you enjoy the show.
Sincerely,
Lee Peters
