"Very entertaining, lots of good singing and dancing" OPJ

A girl from Utah meets a sailor from Utah, and so it starts.  This is a spoof and has many things following familiar themes of past
musical shows.  Parts of the plot are similar to 42nd street, and
then some.  Drury Lane produces one hit after another and this
is another for their ever growing list of accomplishments.

The show runs until May 25th but get your tickets early, this is
sure to be a crowd pleaser.

DIRECTORS NOTES

In the late 1950's a young team of writers (George Haimsohn and Jim Wise) put together a 10-minute cabaret piece that was a parody of all of the cliches of the 1930's movie musicals. At the same time, British writer, Robin Miller was also working on a project
about the Ruby Keeler/Dick Powell era. After teaming up, the trio had a 45 minute show called GOLDDIGGERS AFLOAT.

Their attempts to get it produced met with the same basic reaction - the idea was sweet but audiences would never care about the movies. It seemed like the end of the road.

Move forward several years to 1962. Caffe Cino, a small, experimental 40 seat theater and coffee house in Greenwich Village is looking for a production. In the back room is a dust-covered pile of previously submitted scripts including our little opus, now retitled DAMES AT SEA.When the show is selected the director has a hard time casting the show (the actors aren't paid) until the choreographer brings in a couple of 17 year olds named David Christmas and Bernadette Peters. The show enjoys a five month run, and then closes with no prospects for the future. The end of the road.

Move forward five years to 1968. Bernadette meets a young choreographer/director named Neal Kenyon who is directing a summer tent production of The Boyfriend, which he had
starred in on Broadway a few years earlier. She shows him the script of Dames; he falls in love with it and uses all of his connections to mount the show Off-Broadway. Critical response is overwhelming and the show runs for 575 performances. Bernadette Peters is
now a star.

Sometimes patience really does pay off.

Start tapping your toes as the delightful musical DAMES AT SEA begins March 19, 2003 at DRURY LANE OAKBROOK.
The hilarious musical comedy DAMES AT SEA will dock- at Dairy Lane Oakbrook from March 19 until May 25, 2003, marking the beginning of the 2003-2004 season.

This charming musical wowed the critics when it opened in 1968, marking the debut of Bernadette Peters, who starred as Ruby DAMES AT SEA has a book and lyrics by George Haimsohn and Robin Miller, with music by Jim Wise. Drury Lane Oakbrook's
artistic director. Ray Frewen, will direct.

DAMES AT SEA is a spoof of the campy, nostalgic Hollywood movie musicals of the 1930s, and has a familiar storyline... a show has to close because the theatre is being torn down. The kids in the chorus have no place to tap dance, and the ingenue has no place to
become a star! Just in time, the solution sails into view - the star of the show is friendly with the captain of a battleship, and all she has to do is convince him to do the show on the ship. Amidst wonderful sona-and-dance numbers, hilarity ensues.

The venerable Iris Lieberman returns to the Dairy Lane stage as Mona, the star whose time may have passed, with veteran Tammy Mader as the wise-cracking Joan and Drury Lane newcomer Cristen Paige as star-to-be Ruby. Joining the ladies will be Roger
Anderson as the Captain, Jerry Galante as Joan's beau Lucky, and Kevin Barthel as lovestruck Dick. Rounding out the cast will be Holly Stauder and Danny Heeter.

Musical Direction will be provided by Margaret James. The design team includes Gregory Slawko (costumes); Kurt Sharp (sets); Shannon McKinney (lighting).
