Principal Tuba Player for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Fellow Oak Park Train Lover Mr.Gene Pokorny will be playing a Tuba Concerto (Journey) written for him.  It depicts locomotives—because Mr. Pokorny belongs to the Union Pacific Historical Society, and spends time watching and chasing trains. Oak Park has its own Train Club that meets at the
Oak Park Public library (Dole Branch, 255 Augusta Street, 708-386-9032).
Their next meeting  is January 5, 2004 from 7 pm - 9 pm, and the contact
for more information is Mr. Henry Kranz at 848-5716.  The Train Club is
hoping Mr. Pokorny will stop by and we are told that the word will go out
to their members about his concert.

Biographical Information on Oak Park's Favorite Tuba Player

Guest conductor David Robertson leads the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra in Beethoven's Overture to Egmont and Nielsen's Fourth Symphony. Arguably one of his best works, the fourth symphony's
ethical concerns are summed up in the subtitle The Inextinguishable, and the foreword to the published score coins the famous motto “Music is
Life, and, like it, Inextinguishable.” The program also features CSO Principal Tuba Gene Pokorny performing John Stevens' Journey,
Concerto for Contrabass Tuba, which mimics the sounds of a locomotive
in three movements.

Pre-concert conversations begin 1 hour and 15 minutes prior to the
concert. Composer John Stevens and Mead Composer in Residence Augusta Read Thomas will speak on this CSO performance during the Pre-Concert Conversations.

This program is also being performed on December 19, and 20. Date
and Time Thursday, December 18, 2003

Subscription Series This Concert is part of the CSO Thursday C Series. Tickets are available for online purchase up until five hours before the start of an event. After that time, you may purchase tickets by calling us at 312-294-3000. The program also features CSO Principal Tuba Gene Pokorny performing John Stevens' Journey, Concerto for Contrabass Tuba, which mimics the sounds of a locomotive in three movements.

In 1988, Sir Georg Solti appointed Gene Pokorny to succeed Arnold Jacobs as principal tuba of the CSO, and he began playing full time with the Orchestra the following year. During the 1992-93 season, he took a leave of absence to play as principal tuba for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, and, while in California, he also worked in film studios, playing scores for the movies Toys, The Fugitive, The Program, Jurassic Park, and Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas.

A proud native of Southern California, Pokorny studied tuba with Jeffrey Reynolds, Larry Johansen, Tommy Johnson, Roger Bobo, and of course, the late Arnold Jacobs. After attending the University of Redlands and graduating from the University of Southern California, he played in the Israel Philharmonic, the Utah Symphony, and the Saint Louis Symphony, in addition to his work in Los Angeles. Sir Georg Solti invited him to play with his Musiciens du Monde, which celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations, as well as with the Solti Orchestra Project at Carnegie Hall.

When he isn’t counting rests in the back row of the Armour Stage, Gene may be found playing with the Chicago Chamber Musicians and Summit Brass, performing solo recitals, playing concerts with his colleagues, or teaching master classes. In addition to performing and teaching, his solo recordings provide a creative outlet, and he also has recorded tuba parts from orchestral pieces which are regularly used in auditions. He wrote a chapter pertaining to orchestral auditions and auditioning for the Tuba Source Book, which was published in 1996.
