Cub's Manager Dusty Baker and Oak Park Journal
Editor Talk About the Heat and Humidity...before
the Quotes Start

Cub's manager, Dusty Baker is taller than me, but he says
he can't grow a beard. I told him one day I would loan him mine.
On a hot and humid day like today he might be welcome to it. I did
ask him how he enjoyed the weather and he said it wasn't too bad.
We also noted that the Marlins would probably do fine in the weather too
and that it would be better for us if the team had just come in from a
more northern climate. Baker is a personable fellow so we spoke a
moment about batters being able to read the catcher's signals.
I told him I had spoken to some Triple A (AAA) pitchers who told
me they were upset when batters tried to spy on their catchers signals.
Dusty Baker told me he knew of no one who could read catcher's codes and
said they would have to have eyes in the back of their head. He would
like to have some guys who could read signals he added with a smile "we'd
get even more hits.." When I left the field with Dusty
Baker all hell broke loose when he was quoted as saying
that Blacks and Latinos could take the heat better than Whites. He
did seem to be
taking the heat better than me. The week that
followed had everyone and their brother getting what
he said wrong and making a lot of much to do with nothing. We
won the game
nonetheless.

2003 Indy 500 Winner Gil de Ferran Sings During the 7th
Inning Stretch

When I spoke with Gil earlier I
asked how his singing voice was and he told me, "not that good".
We also
found out that he was a Marlin's
fan, but we kept that
a secret until after he sang.
I asked why he didn't sing
the song in Portugese, his native
language from Brazil.
He said that it was enough to learn
the song in English, and not enough time for more than one language.
He was in good spirits and sang pretty well too.
