Good men still live! ("I am the other Karel Čapek.")

"........... maintenance work is what I was cut out for. My job at Danly’s is very similar to some of the better assignments I had in the mines, not to mention my boiler-room work in Vojna. So, whether this be freedom or just
free enterprise, rest assured that I qualified for it in the Communist jails of my own land.  I am a professional prisoner.

And I am a survivor. I have survived six and a quarter years of Nazi occupation; twenty-one and a half years of Communism—eleven and a quarter of them in prison and a year and a day of them under Soviet occupation; and even a year or two of the Nixon recession. And, through all of those ordeals from construction sites in Pribram to construction work at Ryerson; from double shifts at Prokop to night shifts at Danly's-there has never been a single day that didn't give me at least one little smile.

I made it. I survived physically. I survived mentally. I survived morally. I survived without having to surrender my self."

I have known Karel Čapek for several decades now and each time I was with him I enjoyed myself and his company.  He loved his wife, his children, Czechoslovakia, and Rottweiler dogs. He had a great sense of humor and loved a good talk.  He was a hero to all who knew him, he was tough and loving and the world has lost a great friend in his passing.  A book about him gives a feel for his youth and the wars of Europe and it can still be had on the internet.

Good men still live! ("I am the other Karel Čapek.")

Rest in Peace my friend.
