15 gram balsa wood structure crushed by 460 pounds!
Bubble gum super hero saves town’s water supply AND goes on to save the Narwhal population!
Where can you see such things happen?
At the Odyssey of the Mind State Competition!

State Competition Results:

Four Oak Park Odyssey of the Mind Teams
Advance to the Next Level
Congratulations to Mann and Julian Students

Nineteen Mann students and six Julian students participated in the state competition on Saturday, March 31, in Belleville, Illinois.  These students were cheered on by 50 coaches, friends, and family members who also made the five hour trip.  All four teams qualified to advance to the World Competition in Ames, Iowa, over Memorial Day weekend.  It is called a World competition instead of a National competition because participants come from all over the World as well as all over the U.S.

Student teams each get eight minutes to present a creative solution to a problem they have been working on for the last several months as well as solving a spontaneous problem.  Student teams are given a spontaneous problem and are scored on how well they solve the problem together in just a few minutes.

Odyssey of the Mind is a creative team problem solving club.  Many schools run this program through their gifted program, but at Mann it is an after school club for any interested fourth and fifth graders and for students at Julian it has been a parent hosted group.

In long term problem 1, Ooh-Motional Vehicle, students had to design and build a vehicle that would carry a student through several situations where a variety of emotions would be experienced.  The vehicle would have to show the appropriate emotion.  Mann students who participated in this problem included: Jonathan Brukhartz, Fiona Golden, Goren Hoyle, JP Hurtado, James Kennedy, Liza Montgomery, and Lila Stratman.  These students were coached by Terri Brukhartz.

In long term problem 2, Weird Science, students had to ‘scientifically’ explain an Earthly phenomenon after sampling part of its surroundings.  This problem is sponsored by NASA and student teams selected their specific environments from offerings photographed from space.  Mann students who participated in this problem included:  Abby Bankes, Nick Bango, Christian Barrett, Ella Meyering, and Levi Raskin.  These students were coached by the mother – daughter team of Rachel and Jodi Cressman (or perhaps we should say grandmother – mother team).

In long term problem 4, You Make the Call, students had to make a structure out of balsa wood, weighing 15 grams or less (about as much as a ball-point pen) that would support weight.  The requirements of this problem also had students explaining a mathematical discovery in the course of their solution.  The structure these Julian students constructed held 460 pounds.  Team members included:  Julia Harris, Julia Meister, Jeremy Pesigan, Mylee Rolock, Kobi Schindler, and Max Yokoo and were coached by Joshua Rolock and Dianna Thomas.

In long term problem 5, Odyssey Angels, students had to invent a magical power that would allow them to help different communities turn a negative situation into a positive situation. In this case the angel’s super power was to turn anything into yummy, personality bubble gum.  Using the magical gum the angels saved a town’s water supply and rescued the Narwhal population.  Mann School team members included Katie Dickel, Nico Gonzalez – Stuver, Alexandra Hedgeman, Noah Hedgeman,  Maddy Share, Gabriel Udofia, and Jacob Weiss who were coached by Traci Udofia and Bridgette Hedgeman.
