News: Senator Harmon Congratulates New State
Senators
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -State Senator Don Harmon (D - Oak Park) offered his congratulations today to the newest members of the Illinois State Senate and House of Representatives. Senator Harmon watched as his new and returning colleagues took the oath of office in the Illinois Senate Chamber to begin the 97th General Assembly. First elected in 2002, Senator Don Harmon is currently serving his third term in the Illinois Senate. In January of 2009, incoming Senate President John Cullerton appointed Harmon Assistant Majority Leader. This week he was appointed President Pro Tempore for the 97th General Assembly. "While we continue to face many challenges in Illinois, the 96th General Assembly accomplished a number of historic reforms, including pensions, a capital plan, McPier, Medicaid, abolishing the death penalty, and a difficult but necessary impeachment," said Senator Harmon. "These accomplishments and our ongoing challenges present opportunities for great advances in the 97th General Assembly and I look forward to working with my new and returning colleagues." Senator Harmon welcomed Senator John Mulroe (D - Edison Park), who was elected in November. Senator Mulroe was named to succeed Senator James DeLeo, who retired last August. ![]() © Oak Park Journal published by Suburban Journals of Chicago Inc. |
