Oak Park Fire Department Saves Adjacent Homes from Destruction in a Box Alarm Blaze. by Ed Vincent April 13, 2011 Oak Park Fire Fighters and surrounding communities responded to a box alarm fire (a call for multiple fire departments to assist in a bigger than average fire) at or around 4:30 p.m.. The sounds of fire engines racing to the fire at 635 North Taylor Avenue could be heard from around the village. One many calls for fire fighters we get an additional community or so respond incase the situation were to get worse, the box alarm was responded to by a total of eight different towns. The fire was started by two young boys in the second grade who were just playing with a discarded lighter that they had found, and at that age that's why we call them kids and we watch them. A baby sitter was with another child in the
backyard of the home when the accident from the small lighter sent the
home
ablaze. In dry weather and little wind a fire can travel and spread with incredible speed once it has started (watch the Christmas tree burn indoors in real time on the video at the end of the story). The young boys were not hurt, there was also no injury to anyone in the house or the two adjacent homes to the north and south of the fire. The hard work of the fire fighters from all the towns brought the blaze under control in about an hour and some, of a total battle. The extra help allowed the fire fighters to rest of moment or two before returning in shifts to deliver high pressure water and with volume to the inferno. The quick and trained response to this
event not only saved the totality of the potential loss of the
inhabitants home but also the additional watering of the surrounding
homes with constant water also prevented the fire from spreading to
those structures.
There was some melting of the plastic siding on one structure, but both homes were still able to be lived in while repairs are being done. Some estimates for the residence at 635 North Taylor Avenue have approached nearly a half million dollars and that work will likely take months to complete. Everyone is safe and doing well and that is the most important thing about any fire. A Christmas
