The Joffrey is a local treasure in the world of top notched ballet and each year the holiday season would not be complete with a viewing of their grand efforts.  The music is sublime and the production is a five star event and in one of the best auditoriums in the nation.  This is truly a ballet for the entire family to enjoy.  We highly recommend this event.

BRIGHTEN YOUR HOLIDAY SPIRIT WITH
THE JOFFREY BALLET’S PRODUCTION OF
ROBERT JOFFREY’S THE NUTCRACKER
AMERICA’S #1 NUTCRACKER

At the Auditorium Theatre, December 10-26, 2010

CHICAGO — November 4, 2010 — The Joffrey Ballet’s 2010-2011 season, entitled Stars, continues with the 23rd anniversary of Chicago’s most popular family holiday event, Robert Joffrey's The Nutcracker, once again transforming the Auditorium Theatre into a winter wonderland complete with magical toys, dancing snowflakes and exotic sweets.  The Joffrey Ballet presents America’s #1 Nutcracker at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University, 50 East Congress Parkway, Chicago, December 10 – 26, 2010.  The Joffrey Ballet is proud to have Harris Bank as the Presenting Sponsor of the 2010 production of Robert Joffrey’s The Nutcracker.

This original production combines classical elegance with thrilling explosive action, set amidst lavish period costumes and spectacular scenery depicting Victorian America in the 1850s.  Fierce battles are waged, snowflakes and flowers dance with magic, and toys come joyfully to life in the hands of familiar characters such as Clara; her mischievous brother, Fritz; the King and Queen of the glorious Land of Snow; the Sugar Plum Fairy; the warring Mice led by the Mouse King; the Nutcracker Prince; and the mysterious Dr. Drosselmeyer.  Completing the Joffrey’s dazzling production is an extravagant set design by Oliver Smith and a giant puppet designed by Kermit Love.  Joffrey Co-Founder Gerald Arpino choreographed the Land of the Snow scene, which closes Act I, and the Waltz of the Flowers in Act II.  The Chicago Sinfonietta will provide live musical accompaniment of Tchaikovsky’s classic score.

Robert Joffrey’s production of The Nutcracker, based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s early 19th century German tale, “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King," has become a Chicago holiday favorite since its first performance here in 1996.  With the help of his Co-Founder and world-class choreographer Gerald Arpino, Robert Joffrey originally created his vision of The Nutcracker in 1987.  The Nutcracker tradition took hold in America following George Balanchine’s 1954 reinvention of the original production choreographed by Marius Petipa, but his and other following productions retained a European setting.  Robert Joffrey was the first choreographer to set the ballet in an American home, populated with toys from his own childhood in the opening party scene.  The curtains rose on The Joffrey Ballet’s The Nutcracker on December 10, 1987 at the Hancher Auditorium at the University of Iowa, with the production then embarking on a national tour.  Since then, The Joffrey Ballet has maintained the most tour dates of any major ballet company in the country so that the beloved Nutcracker can be brought to the homes of children across the country.

The Joffrey continues its tradition of being joined on stage by almost 120 young dancers from all over the Chicago area, Indiana and Wisconsin.  In addition, young vocalists from the Providence-St. Mel School Choir, the Oak Park and River Forest Children’s Choir and the Barrington Children’s Choir will perform the choral parts from Tchaikovsky's magical "snow scene."  The choirs will also delight audiences with popular seasonal selections in the Auditorium Theatre's main lobby one half-hour prior to curtain and during intermissions at every performance.

New to the Joffrey Store this year is Bob the Joffrey Monskey.  A perfect souvenir item, Bob is the first Monskey ever commissioned for a Nutcracker production, created specifically for The Joffrey Ballet.  The design on the vinyl Japanese toy depicts the valiant Nutcracker Prince on one side and the treacherous Mouse King on the other.  For more information, please visit joffrey.org.

The Joffrey Ballet is grateful for the support of its 2010-2011 Season Sponsors, including Abbott Fund and NIB Foundation, co-sponsors of the Stars Season; UBS, Live Music Sponsor; United Airlines, Official & Exclusive Airline; Weiss Memorial Hospital, Official Healthcare Provider; AthletiCo, Official Provider of Rehabilitation, Fitness and Performance; and  MAC, Official Cosmetic Sponsor.  The Joffrey is also grateful for its Season Partners:  Sara Lee Foundation, Groupon and Whole Foods Market.  And the Joffrey would like to extend special gratitude to Harris Bank, Nutcracker Presenting Sponsor, and the Macy’s Foundation, Nutcracker Production Sponsor.

The Stars Season Continues

In February 2011, The Joffrey presents the Midwest premiere of Ronald Hynd’s The Merry Widow, also a company premiere for The Joffrey.  Hynd, who celebrates his 80th birthday in 2011, originally choreographed the three-act story ballet for The Australian Ballet in 1975, set to John Lanchbery and Alan Abbott’s adaptation of Franz Lehár’s 1905 romantic operetta The Merry Widow.  A neoclassical ballet, the scenario and staging for The Merry Widow were created by Sir Robert Helpmann, while Italian designer Roberta Guidi di Bagno’s exquisite costumes and scenery lay the backdrop for a tale of comedic intrigue, filled with elegant ladies, eligible bachelors and famed can-can dancers.  This evening-length work will be performed February 16 – 27, 2011.

The 2010-2011 Season concludes with Rising Stars, a mixed repertory program featuring two World Premieres, by Edwaard Liang and Yuri Possokhov, and a company premiere by Julia Adam.  A former soloist for New York City Ballet, Liang’s first work for The Joffrey, The Age of Innocence, premiered in the fall of 2008 and was met with critical and audience acclaim.  His theatrical work paired 19th century romanticism with athletic prowess and a contemporary sensibility.  Possokhov, a former dancer for the Bolshoi Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet, and a principal dancer and choreographer for the San Francisco Ballet, has made a name for himself as an austere and charismatic dancer and a bold, innovative choreographer.  The Joffrey Ballet is proud to commission these two new works.  Rounding out the bill will be the company premiere of Night, choreographed by Julia Adam and originally premiered by the San Francisco Ballet in 2000.  Inspired by the paintings of Marc Chagall and set to the music of “Night Grooves,” commissioned by composer Matthew Pierce, Adam’s fantastical work follows a woman through her dreams and nightmares over the course of a night.  The spring Rising Stars program will be performed May 4 – 15, 2011.

Robert Joffrey created this Nutcracker, turning a decidedly European ballet into a uniquely American experience. The holidays are captured In 120 minutes as the entire Joffrey company takes the stage, creating the magic of the season. The Joffrey’s Nutcracker maintains the spirit of the original 1987 performance, while sparkling with contemporary choreography, dazzling costumes, Tchaikovsky’s thrilling score, inventive lighting and extravagant set design. The Joffrey Nutcracker is the star on top of Chicago’s most Christmas tree. It ignites the imagination of children of every generation. Join us to share in the magic!
