Betty Loren-Maltese is in Oak Park
by Ed Vincent

When I first met Betty Loren-Maltese, who invited us to call her "Betty" I was impressed.  She is an attractive woman with an engaging smile and a frankness in discussion that is refreshing.

She told us that it is a real treat being out a jail and the confinement she has endured.  She has seen her daughter Ashleigh recently and hopes to see more of her soon.  She has been away from her daughter the majority of the young girl's life and with more time perhaps things will get back to a better and closer relationship with her daughter.

Betty has many friends in the area.  On the night we went to Salerno's Pizza in Oak Park (
at
7128 Roosevelt Road, just a block east of Harlem Avenue) we met a 98 year old woman with a cane who had come to visit Betty from the British Home in the next suburb.  There were many such visits that night and many more to  come given the interest in Betty. The restaurant has had call after call from folks wanting to know if Betty was working that night.  Many folks after hearing that Betty was there came in with their families.

The restaurant was as busy as it can get with folks waiting a half an hour to get a seat, and the food was delicious, the pizza great.  This little area of Oak Park is doing well, with no apparent recession.  Betty and I discussed the old issue of whether or not Ernest Hemingway was born in Oak Park or Cicero and she did confess at the time it was called Cicero township but that now it is in Oak Park.  I don't know if that was a condition of her getting a job in Oak Park or not.

Betty also still has a strong interest in politics and does not agree with the current President of Cicero Larry Dominick,  he's spending too much money and for the wrong things.  She is currently prohibited from running for office because of her being conviceted of felony.  Laws can change and if Saint Vincent de Paul, who was  once a horse thief, can become a Saint why not Betty? or at least an elected official........

This was her second night on her feet, the first night she wore flats and her back was killing her.  Tonight she had elevated heels, giving her an additional couple of inches in height and perhaps less stress on her back she hoped..if not tomorrow she might wear gym shoes.

She's a popular gal who has served her time and we wish her the best for the future.  After those years behind bars she looks better than ever, so if you're a single gent and want some great Italian food come see Betty.  She is currently working on Wednesdays through Sundays starting at 4:00pm.  You can also come with your family.....
