OAK PARK, Ill. – Oak Park businesswoman Tia Harrison was honored for her professional achievement, leadership, and community service with a national award from Women in Management, Inc. Harrison, co-owner of Home Instead Senior Care in Oak Park, received the Charlotte Danstrom Woman of Achievement Entrepreneur Service award Tuesday, May 20, during the national Women in Management annual conference at the Carleton of Oak Park. “It’s an honor to be recognized for doing what I love most, which is serving this area’s seniors, serving as a role model for other women, and giving back to the community” said Harrison, whose resume also includes positions in public and media relations, marketing, and news reporting. Women in Management is a national organization founded in 1976 that provides mentoring and support to its members through continuing education and development. Harrison received the local Woman of Achievement Award from the Near West Cook Chapter of WIM April 7, making her eligible for the national honor. She is the first African-American woman to receive the award, which honors the memory of one of the organization’s founders. "I strongly encouraged Tia to apply for the Charlotte Danstrom award because I thought it so appropriate for her to be the first African-American woman to receive the award," said KL Robertson Daly, Women in Management, Inc. national president. "She is a talented entrepreneur and dedicated community leader." Harrison and her husband, Richard, purchased Home Instead Senior Care in Oak Park in July 2002. Independently owned and operated, Home Instead Senior Care provides non-medical, in-home care and companionship to seniors. This latest business venture has allowed Harrison to serve as a mentor to her many female staff members and professional caregivers, and serve the community as well through the annual “Be a Santa to a Senior” program. Sponsored by Home Instead Senior Care, the program provides hundreds of gifts and companionship to forgotten seniors in Oak Park and surrounding communities during the holidays. Harrison received her bachelor’s degree in journalism from Iowa State University in 1987. She is also a recent graduate of the Joseph Business School for Entrepreneurship in Forest Park where she was she was named a Joseph Scholar, one of the top three graduates in her class. She currently serves as Vice President of Communications for the Near West Cook Chapter of WIM. A recipient of the Chapter Board Member of the Year Award in 2007, Harrison served as Secretary from 2006-2007. In addition to the Women in Management award, Harrison was honored at the Home Instead Senior Care international convention in Omaha, Neb., April 9-12, when she received the Presidential I and Cornerstone V awards for outstanding business performance.
