Accident on South Oak Park Avenue Destroys
Traffic Signal and almost hits the Flower shop.
report by Ed Vincent

Around 1:30 pm a red Jeep traveling south on Oak Park Avenue
jumped the curb and smashed into the traffic signal located on the north-west corner of the intersection before the expressway.
The young man driving was taken to the hospital with some
head trauma.  He was wearing his safety belt, which saved him,
and his airbag system failed to deploy.  Fortunately no one
was on the sidewalk or near the location of the crash or a
fatality would have been easily in the picture.

There were no reports of driving under the influence, but that
is hard to tell right away when the person is shook up after an
accident.  There was no alcohol noted in the vehicle or DUI
suspected.  There was no apparent reason for the crash but
some had thought of a cell phone or other distraction.

The Jeep was removed from the sidewalk with the assistance
of a flat bed hauler and police had the entire block closed off
while the Village removed, repaired and installed a new
device for controlling traffic.

15 or more years ago a vehicle was headed north across the
bridge over the Eisenhower with a couple inside.  The man
and woman were having a heated dispute when the man left
the auto and began to walk across the street and headed towards the Westgate Flower shop.  The woman wanted the last word
but he wouldn't listen so she tried to run him down with their car.  She missed him but drove into the Westgate Flower shop.
The flower shop owner was relieved today-
no Jeep in his store.

The only person injured today was the young man driving the
Jeep and no one else.  He is expected to recover fine.
