November 6, 2007 ![]() Official Opening of Maya Del Sol (144 S. The owner is a charming man, Anan Abutaleb, and he goes around and speaks with his patrons to find how things are doing. The wait staff are polite, well informed, and have a good eye for detail. There is valet parking, and ample parking a block north which is either free or the first two hours free. On to the food. My first taste was a taco, a taco which was unique, it had an inviting taste, ingredients not often found in a standard Mexican taco--cilantro and even some fine shaved carrots--color and taste. Having perused the menu my eye was immediately drawn to a Kobe Cheeseburger. This is not the $300.00 a pound Kobe from Japan, but a more reasonable Kobe from Australia, but Kobe nonetheless (a black Tajima-ushi breed of Wagyu). This Kobe cheeseburger is worth the visit all by itself, Jimmy Buffet would even redefine Paradise with this number. The taste is grand with each bite, but the stand out from the best Black Angus would be in the texture of the burger. A burger by definition does not come from the best cuts of meat and it is also by definition ground up, yet there is a difference in the smoothness of texture inherent in the marbled structure of the meat itself. The end of all this analysis is that the cheeseburger at Maya del Sol is one of the tops in the Chicago Metro area. The desserts were top notched and prepared by a dessert chef with an eye and taste for quality and beauty. Live music on Friday nights (from 9 p.m. until midnight) and the few bands we have had the pleasure to hear were phenomenal. ![]() Oak Park Avenue from Inside Maya del Sol. © Suburban Journals of Chicago Inc. photo http://www.mayadelsol.com "The tacos we had were the best I have ever had and if this restaurant were on Marion Street the taxpayers could have saved $6,000,000.00 and some change...this place sounds and tastes that good."
