Horace Mann Elementary School Asks “How Green Can We Go?!” Horace Mann Elementary School will once again join schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School the week of October 1 - 5, 2007. The school’s celebration is titled “How Green Can We Go?!” and will focus on things kids can do to help make our world a little greener. Village President David Pope, and Village Trustees Jan Pate and Jon Hale will help greet students on Monday, October 1 and distribute green leaf tokens to students who walk or ride their bike to school. Oak Park Police will greet students on Tuesday and Oak Park Firefighters will do the same on Friday. Mann schoolteachers and staff will also help greet students during the week. Each day students who arrive on foot will earn another leaf to add to their class tree to symbolize how walking or biking helps make the world greener. During the week, the school will focus on different aspects of the environment, such as water, earth or energy, with challenges and tips that support the day’s theme. Monday, October 1 will be Conserve Water Day and students will be asked to wear blue, bring only washable water bottles and turn off the water when they brush their teeth. Tuesday, October 2 will be Protect the Earth Day. Students will be asked to wear green and bring only washable or recyclable containers in their lunchbox. Other themes that week will be Save Energy, Care for Our Air and Turn off and Play. Teachers and staff will also use the week to discuss |
