Literacy Volunteers of Western Cook County Meet at Holley Court for Their Annual Appreciation Event.
by Ed Vincent

These events are always fun and they are also a good time if
you like cookies, fruit drinks, coffee, and other tasty items.
Each year the tutor and their students are acknowledged for the
fine work that they do throughout the year.

Ms. Clare Donovan, a past board member of the organization
spoke of the wonderful work done by the volunteers and how
dedicated the folks are, even a short note about how Executive Director Angela West Blank went into a High School styled cheer
the other day-during a meeting.

Ms. Rose Meyer gives her keynote address and explains the
clear example of how what you see in life greatly outweighs
what you hear.  Her personal family story was fun and is
available on the streaming video above.  Rose Meyer has
been a community activist for years, and key opponent of the
construction of the WhiteCo building.  She mentioned that
there is too much construction and feels we may have
reached enough people in Oak Park.  We also spoke about
the traffic on Lake street and how busy it has become.

Tutor and Student of the Year Awards go to Ms. Judy DeBoer
(Tutor) and her student Ms. Iwona Stankiewicz.

Ms. Judy DeBoer was awarded the tutor of the year
and her student
Ms. Iwona Stankiewicz received the student
of the year
award.  Ms. Stankiewicz is a native Polish speaker
and she has made wonderful progress in speaking and reading
her new language.

These three students, some here for years, some new arrivals
from other countries have all made great progress in starting
and improving their English reading and writing skills.  One
person was able to take their driving license test in English
and pass, others welcome their new skills and thank the
volunteers for all their efforts.

It all ends with smiles and ballons, like all gatherings should.
